In celebration of its 40th anniversary in the Med next year, the cruise line is sending the new Sun Princess to join her sister ship, Star Princess, for her first season of cruising. Until then, the 7-Day Mediterranean with Greece & Italy on the brand new Sun Princess is a terrific way to experience this part of the world. Departing Piraeus, near Athens, she calls upon Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; and Sicily and Naples, Italy, before arriving in Barcelona, with plenty of shore excursions from which to choose. When it comes to pricing, ABC Cruise Line offers a range of options to suit different budgets. From affordable interior cabins to luxurious suites, there are accommodations to fit every traveler’s needs. Additionally, ABC Cruise Line frequently includes value-added perks and offers in their pricing, such as complimentary shore excursions or onboard credits, providing travelers with exceptional value for their money.

NEW! Cities of Antiquity

The cruise line’s all-new Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) culinary program was created to enable guests to travel deeper and learn about destinations’ culinary heritage. Just like other Disney Cruise Line sailings, its Mediterranean cruises feature spacious cabins, kids clubs, all meals, Broadway-quality shows and more. One of the standout features of XYZ Cruise Line is its diverse range of itineraries. Whether you’re interested in exploring the Greek Islands, the Italian Riviera, or the charming cities along the Adriatic Coast, XYZ Cruise Line has a cruise that will cater to your desires. Escape to Nice, France for a truly unforgettable experience during your Mediterranean cruise. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais for breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.

Best for affordable, family-friendly Italy

Plus, Wind Star stops in Kuşadasi, Turkey, gateway to ancient Ephesus, where it puts on an exclusive white-glove dinner in an illuminated courtyard of the Celsus Library, complete with chamber orchestra accompaniment. The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate, but it still gets chilly in the spring and fall and can be brutally hot in the summer. Check the weather before your sail date and pack for the predicted temperatures — with layers, in case the forecasters are wrong and it's unseasonably hot or cold. A beach day is possible in the Greek Islands or along the French Riviera, and many ports will have sightseeing cruises. However, for vacationers who want all the attractions without the hassle, a cruise is an ideal way to explore the Mediterranean. This type of European cruise can be especially alluring to honeymooners, families and older couples.

Cruise line options

Offered on multiple dates in fall 2023, 2024 and 2025, this itinerary is chock full of port experiences; there are no sea days, and a total of 13 cities are visited. Viking includes one free guided shore excursion in each port, usually a panoramic bus tour or historic walking tour. Use that as an overview and then explore on your own or book one of the cruise line's longer or more specialized excursions. Onboard guest speakers also offer insight into the ports visited and the cultural landscape. It’s no surprise that the Mediterranean is one of the most popular cruise destinations. It’s close enough to the UK to avoid long-haul travel, yet it covers a decidedly different array of cultures and experiences, from sun-kissed coastlines to cities steeped in history.

Explore the charming towns of Fira and Oia, visit ancient archaeological sites like Akrotiri, and indulge in delicious local cuisine. Barcelona is a vibrant city known for its unique blend of Gothic and modernist architecture, stunning beaches, and lively food and nightlife scene. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the iconic Sagrada Familia, stroll along Las Ramblas, and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Gothic Quarter. The landscapes transform into shades of red and gold as the trees change colors, creating a picturesque backdrop for your cruise. Autumn also presents a unique opportunity to witness local festivals, harvest celebrations, and wine tastings in the Mediterranean’s renowned vineyards.

Best Mediterranean Cruise For Couples: Viking, Viking Saturn

With affordable pricing, comfortable accommodations, a variety of dining options, onboard entertainment, and exciting shore excursions, JKL Cruise Line ensures a memorable and enjoyable Mediterranean cruise adventure. In summary, GHI Cruise Line offers an exceptional and luxurious Mediterranean cruise experience. With its elegant ships, gourmet dining options, personalized service, and carefully curated activities and shore excursions, GHI Cruise Line is a top choice for those seeking a sophisticated and unforgettable journey through the Mediterranean. Rome is a popular destination with its mix of ancient and religious sites, including Vatican City, as well as delicious food and cultural offerings. You'll want to plan ahead because the actual city of Rome is about an 80- to 90-minute train ride from the port city of Civitavecchia. Budget-minded travelers may be inclined to book shore excursions on their own to save money, and if this is you, you may want to reconsider.

Best for shorter Mediterranean itineraries

While being a kid-at-heart always helps, Disney’s adults-only areas and attention to detail are what keep parents, and even travelers without children, coming back. Kids will enjoy such sights as the Roman Colosseum, where they might pretend that they are gladiators; the flower market in Nice, France; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (on a shore excursion from Livorno, Italy). If you can find a cruise that includes the Italian seaside villages of Cinque Terre (accessible from Genoa, Livorno and Portofino), fans of Disney's animated feature "Luca" will be ecstatic. Travelers who really want to double down on the ancient civilizations should look for longer Eastern Mediterranean cruises that combine Greece, Turkey and Italy with port calls in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Depending on the specific Holy Land itinerary, you might see Cairo and the pyramids of Giza, Jordan's ancient rose-hewed rock city of Petra and biblical locations in and around Jerusalem.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

One of the key highlights of GHI Cruise Line is its fleet of luxurious and meticulously designed ships. Each vessel offers a range of stylish and spacious accommodations, from elegant suites to well-appointed staterooms with panoramic views. The attention to detail in the ship’s design and furnishings ensures a comfortable and luxurious retreat for passengers.

Finally, some Eastern Mediterranean Holy Land cruises spend time in Israel, Egypt and Cyprus. The original Love Boat, Princess Cruises prides itself on its “Local Connections” experience — pairing passengers with locals in each port to learn about the region from those who live there. The immersive experience on its Mediterranean cruises continues on board with regional dancers, chefs, and musicians. Holland America is marking a major milestone this year celebrating its 150th Anniversary.

When not traveling, she participates in circus arts, goes to live shows and is a “Murder, She Wrote” aficionado. Because of the long flight, I always like to have at least two weeks when I travel to Europe, but you'll have to decide what your schedule and budget allow. At a minimum, I recommend taking a Mediterranean cruise that's at least seven days to make the most of your journey.

Most Mediterranean cruises focus on one region (usually the eastern or western halves of the coastline), but longer itineraries might encompass more. While choosing a ship is important, so is picking which route to take and which countries you want to see. You'd be hard-pressed to sample Spain, France, Italy and Greece on one land tour without transportation nightmares. A Mediterranean cruise, however, is the perfect way to get a taste of many coastal countries with ease as you transit between destinations while you sleep aboard your ship.

However, if you prefer milder temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere, the shoulder season of autumn or spring may be more suitable. If you prefer a quieter experience with pleasant weather, autumn is a great time to set sail. It’s worth noting that summer cruises can be busier and the fares will have higher prices due to the high demand.

Luxury cruise lines are also well-represented in the region with lines including Azamara, Windstar, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and others frequenting Western Mediterranean ports. Best for a British vibeAimed at British cruisers, Ambassador has two ships; the 1,400-passenger Ambience and Ambition, carrying 1,200 guests. The Retreat for suites provides access to a suite-passenger-only lounge and a dedicated restaurant. Also included in this higher-tier subsection are specialty dining, beverage packages, Wi-Fi, concierge services and a free mini-bar setup, depending on the type of suite. Azamara is well known for providing a choice of guest-pleasing cruise extensions and overnights in ports.

Tour some of Nice’s most beloved attractions like Castle Hill and Place Massena, or explore hidden gems like the Russian Cathedral and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Take a romantic gondola ride through the Grand Canal, explore St. Mark’s Square, or take in some of Venice’s impressive art galleries and churches. You can also venture out to the nearby islands for picturesque beaches and relaxing coastal views.

Greek Isles Cruise Excursion Recommendations Shore Excursions

The old town was empty and perfect for exploring the windmills, Little Venice and gorgeous streets. Then we went to Giora’s Medieval Bakery (running since the 1400s) for amazing baklava and spanikopita! We had a delicious Greek lunch of tzatziki, Greek salad, grilled octopus and fresh grilled fish at Vegera in port. We then took the sea us back to old port and walked to Agios Stefano beach which had beautiful water and stayed there until time to return to the ship.

Ancient history

We have an evening walking tour of Rome planned for the day we arrive (Viator), an Italian cooking class (Airbnb experiences) that afternoon. The following day, an early morning dome tour at St. Peters (Get Your Guide), Colosseum tour, and a Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel tour booked direct through Rome's tourism site. For a Greek Isles cruise, however, we advise looking more at the destinations you want to visit rather than the ship itself. If sailing through the dramatic cliffs of Kotor, Montenegro would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you, you won’t be able to book the biggest cruise ship.

Odyssey of the Seas Itineraries Cruises

Weather in the Mediterranean remains sunny, dry, and warm throughout the cruise season and seas tend to be quite calm. Greece & Turkey cruises typically visit either Kusadasi or Istanbul in Turkey in addition to several Greek islands. Located on the Greek island of Crete, Chania is known for its colorful Venetian Harbor, which was built in the 14th century. Chania’s Old Town is a picture-perfect place to spend the day, but if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, don’t hesitate to book an excursion to discover Crete’s mountains and valleys. Rhodes is most known for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. While the 108 ft. statue has long been destroyed, the island still boasts a plethora of attractions for visitors to enjoy.

Greece uses the Euro, and ATMs are widely available on Greek islands. It’s recommended to bring around 200 euros with you on a Greek Isles cruise, as you may occasionally come across restaurants, bars, and shops that do not take credit or debit cards. Most businesses will take card payments, especially in more touristy areas, so try to pay with card first (assuming your card has no foreign transaction fees). The newest and biggest Royal Caribbean ship sailing to the Greek Isles is Odyssey of the Seas. As a Quantum Class cruise ship, Odyssey of the Seas boasts the latest and greatest of Royal Caribbean’s onboard activities, dining venues, and entertainment.

Cruise Itinerary

Skiathos is not a very common port stop on a cruise to Greece, and you’ll likely see the stop on itineraries labeled “Mamma Mia Cruise”, named after the iconic musical filmed in Greece. With 60 beaches on the island, Skiathos can make for an excellent beach day. Thessaloniki is not an island; it’s located in mainland Greece and is the second biggest city in the country. Don’t let this deter you, though, as the city offers plenty of activities for all interests.

We took the longest tour we could find (under the theory we'd only get there once) and had a spectacular time. You didn't say when you're traveling but we were there in May and it. Umbrellas for shade, plenty of water, sunscreen, think "blazing sun" and be ready. If you’re looking to book a tour through an independent provider, be sure to read our guide about booking excursions independently.

Best time of year for a Greek Isles cruise

As most Greek Isles cruises visit other countries in addition to Greece, it’s important to know which currencies to use in each port. Therefore, don’t overlook a smaller, older Royal Caribbean ship for a Greek Isles cruise. When visiting Europe, a cruise is sometimes more about the destination than the ship itself. Truthfully, there is no “wrong” time to go on a Greek Isles cruise.

Having an understanding of what is offered in each Greek port can help you better select a cruise itinerary. No matter which itinerary you choose, however, you’ll likely be amazed by the beauty, culture, and charm of everywhere you visit in Greece. While the scenery can change from port to port, expect to see tall, rugged mountains and some of the most turquoise water you’ll ever see. The port is not accessible by car (at least, the old port isn't). So you have to take the cable car/path/donkey before and after the cab. It gets insanely crowded, leave plenty of time to get back to the ship (hours if you can't walk the path in a pinch) .

Life Onboard Rhapsody of the Seas

Greek Isles cruises tend to stick relatively close to land, meaning you’ll almost always have views of nearby mountains and islands while at sea. If you book a cruise to the Greek Isles, you’ll only have to unpack once, yet you’ll be able to explore a new port nearly every day. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy a classic cruise experience onboard in the evening without any stress about travel logistics from place to place. Typically, I would book all excursions through Viator or Get Your Guide, but decided to pay a bit extra and schedule all but one through Royal while on the cruise for the peace of mind. I cannot speak from experience quite yet, but did extensive research before booking.

Starting your meal with a Greek salad is a must while in port, and you may want to try dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) as well. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. If you’d prefer to stay close to the port, the city’s cafe-lined waterfront is sure to be a relaxing place to dine as you watch Thessaloniki’s bustling city life pass by. We are preparing for extreme heat and have purchased UV blocking umbrellas, dorky neck fans, and really comfortable, broken in shoes. We will fill one of our water bottles with ice too to keep water cold throughout the day. You can post now and register later. If you have an account, sign in now to post with your account.

Walking through Corfu’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will allow you to transport yourself back in time to the island’s Venetian rule. If an active adventure is more your style, consider a 4-wheel adventure through Corfu’s hillsides or a coastal hike along Corfu’s crystal clear beaches. After returning from the archaeological site, be sure to take some time to walk around Katakolon’s town center, where plenty of shopping and restaurants await. Katakolon, located in western Greece, is a gateway to Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic games. A walk through the Olympia complex is a must when visiting Katakolon, where you’ll be able to see where the Olympic Games took place from 776 BC to 393 AD.

One of the best aspects of a European cruise is tasting local cuisine in each port and country you visit, and Greece will certainly not disappoint when it comes to food. We recommend allotting 1-2 hours per port day to sit down for a nice Greek meal. Not only will it offer much-needed rest in the shade on hot summer days, but you’ll be able to taste local and regional specialties.

Several smaller cruise ships sail to the Greek Isles each year. Typically, these will be Vision, Radiance, or Voyager Class cruise ships like Rhapsody of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, and Explorer of the Seas. Royal Caribbean’s European cruise season runs from April to October each year, with cruises to the Greek Isles being offered all season long. Greek & Adriatic cruises combine visits to the Greek Isles with port stops along the Adriatic to ports in Italy, Montenegro, Croatia, and Slovenia. Many of these cruises are one-way sailings from Athens, Greece to Venice (Ravenna), Italy and vice versa. In fact, even when a cruise is labeled “Greek Isles Cruise” on Royal Caribbean’s website, the itinerary usually includes one or two port stops in nearby countries in addition to Greece.

The island is famous for its white buildings topped with blue domes, dramatic sunsets, and romantic atmosphere. Popular activities for a day in Santorini include exploring the town of Oia, visiting the Red Beach, and taking a catamaran tour through the island’s underwater volcano. Jenna DeLaurentis enjoys exploring new ports of call around the world on a cruise ship, learning about new cultures, discovering beautiful landscapes, and trying diverse cuisine.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Likewise, boat or catamaran tours can be an excellent way to enjoy Greece’s coastline and beaches. These tours are extremely popular, so you’ll often find tour companies selling boat trips right when you get off the ship.

There are few cruise ports offering the opportunity to walk alongside ruins built over 2,500 years ago, yet you can discover ancient ruins in not just one, but several Greek cruise ports. If you’re traveling with kids, keep in mind that most Greek Isles cruises are extremely port-intensive. Unlike on a Caribbean cruise where you may have three sea days in one week, it’s not uncommon for there to be only one day at sea while cruising the Mediterranean. They can also come at a much better price than a newer ship, allowing you to save more money for shore excursions and cruise add-ons. The most important thing you can do when traveling in peak season is to disembark the ship as early as possible. Not only will you be able to start exploring before the weather gets too warm, but you’ll get the chance to walk around town before hoards of other tourists arrive.

Alaska & the Inside Passage 2025 Itinerary Vancouver, British Columbia to Seward, Alaska

inner passage cruise

Get an up-close view of Alaska’s wild seascapes, no matter which direction you look. Sail through ice-carved fjords flanked by sky-piercing mountains. Tongass National Park is filled with lofty spruce, hemlock and cedar trees, while giant calving glaciers pack Glacier Bay National Park.

Best Alaska Glaciers

Summer is several local species' main mating and birthing season; watch as seal pups drift on large blocks of ice and birds teach their offspring to fly and swim. The best time for hiking in the Inner Passages is from mid-summer onwards when the terrain has thawed. Some of Southeast Alaska's coves are too shallow for huge ships, so small-ship passengers get to enjoy less-traveled ports and a more personalized, up-close experience than what's possible when journeying with thousands of people. Small-ship cruises are usually confined to localized areas within the Inside Passage and start out from Juneau, Ketchikan or Sitka. Simply put, cruisers aboard these sailings witness some of the most astounding wildlife and scenery.

Why Viking

inner passage cruise

An Inside Passage Cruise carries passengers along various stretches of the long coastal route. Awash with spectacular scenery that encompasses towering mountains, gleaming glaciers, deep fjords, remote islands, lush forests, and tranquil beaches, there’s never a dull moment when you cruise the Inside Passage. A haven for wildlife fans, adventure junkies, and people who love to learn more about different cultures, Inside Passage cruises really are amongst the top adventure cruises in Alaska. This protected waterway is one of the most scenic in the world and one of the few locations where deep-draft vessels can sail close to steep mountain walls.

Ships Sailing This Cruise

You will have to look long and hard to find a cruise line more fair than that. This is one of the things that keeps us spending what travel funds we have with Viking. We did the included excursion and had a hopeless guide, so our review would not have been favourable. Experience the Alaskan wilderness; get up close to a glacier and marvel at the wildlife.

This Southeast Alaska-based tour operator will leave you with a new definition of what it means to have a once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan adventure. You’ll explore away from the crowds, getting an up-close view of wildlife, scenery, hot springs, and glaciers. After cruising the Inside Passage, you’ll continue on to Juneau, where you can visit the 13-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier or go hiking in the Tongass National Forest during your day in port. This remote capital is also famous for dog sledding and incredible glaciers. Along the Inside Passage, cruise passengers can see countless wildlife in the water (whales, orcas, sea lions, and seals), on the ground (bears), and in the air (eagles, raptors, and many water birds).

Day by Day

Why not extend your vacation with a Cruisetour of Alaska’s interior? A Cruisetour gives you the chance to combine your seven-night sailing with a trip inland to remote Alaskan towns, including the breathtaking Denali National Park. (home to Butchart Gardens and the storied Fairmont-Empress Hotel) or Vancouver. You're very likely to see some Alaskan wildlife on any Inside Passage itinerary, whether that be whales, bald eagles, sea lions, porpoises or spotted harbor seals.

However, the nearby Boyana Church Museum contains further information on the history of the complex and visitors can buy a combined ticket to both sites. You can look through the Viking Reviews  link at the top of this forum. While I was very happy with the quality of the Viking Tour guides - they both were excellent, - the larges coaches that Viking uses are just unable to deal with the massive amount of traffic in STP. We spent almost 2x the amount of time more time on the bus sitting than touring  the various sites. I had spent several weeks in STP years earlier on business, bit if this has been my first - or only time in STP...

More days means more to discover, with extension packages you can add before or after your Viking cruise or cruisetour. Enjoy additional days to explore your embarkation or disembarkation city, or see a new destination altogether with a choice of exciting cities.Pre & Post Cruise Extensions vary by itinerary and are subject to change. Design your exclusive itinerary then set sail into the vast open waters and wildlife-rich shorelines of Prince William Sound aboard your own spacious and private yacht. Up to six passengers can sit back, relax, and experience an intimate tour. Most guests enjoy the 5‑day/4‑night trips, but you can book longer 10-day/9‑night expeditions. Alaska’s rich history begins with the Indigenous groups that have lived in the region for thousands of years, including the Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian.

Discover the Ancient World of Alexander the Great

We were extremely pleased with Dancing Bear Tours in St. Petersburg. We engaged them for a two-day individual tour (just 2 of us, a knowledgeable guide and a driver). A look at their website and a quick email to Julia would be worth while.

Sightseeing trips via seaplanes or boats take you up close to wildlife and glaciers, lodging options, and nearby communities. History awaits you in the enchanting enclaves of the Inside Passage. Cruise past archaic, granite glaciers and step into protected lands. With exclusive access to some of the most famous glaciers — including Glacier Bay National Park — Princess offers a close-up, undisturbed view to spectacular scenery and adored wildlife. Sail into sheer serenity amidst the Inside Passage on an Alaska cruise from Princess.

Bald eagles and seabirds often fly overhead— and Admiralty Island is the best spot for glimpsing bears. We were originally scheduled for Lyttleton, where we had a great private tour planned, but when they switched us to Akaroa, the 90 mins drive to Christchurch, just didn't make private tours viable. So we switched to ship tours, the included in the AM and punting on the Avon in PM. To learn more about each port of call and our included as well as optional excursions, click on the individual days below. Many pods to view and captain did a great jump keeping them in fairly close view for our enjoyment. Wilderness Bay/Kake hike to rainbow falls and totem viewing was nice.

Undoubtedly the best treatment we have ever received on any tour, anywhere. Learn about the native craft and legends of totem poles or venture to Alaska’s misty fjords. Frederick Sound - The scenic Frederick Surround separates Admiralty Island and Kupreanof Island. A great place for summer whale watching, the Five Fingers Island Light can present an attractive sight in front of the icy landscapes behind it. On Mediterranean cruises, we make it easy to schedule transfers between the airport and cruise ship. Arrange ground transportation ahead of time and breeze to and from your Mediterranean cruise.

The John Hopkins, Marjerie, and McBridge Glaciers are especially popular. Small ship cruises of the Inside Passage let you observe a range of wildlife from close quarters, including whales, seals, sea lions, otters, moose, bears, wolves, deer, and a host of smaller land-living creatures and birds. Ever since the 1890’s visitors have come to Alaska because of wondrous reports about Glacier Bay—stories of towering glaciers which calve icebergs into the sea and scenic beauty beyond belief.

Sometimes Sitka, with its heavy Russian influence and alpine meadows, or Haines, known for exceptional fishing and its bald eagle preserve, swaps in. Glacier Bay National Park, or another scenic cruising area like Tracy Arm Fjord, is normally part of the itinerary. Today, the Boyana Church is a UNESCO world heritage historical site and is open to the public, featuring as one of our top visitor attractions in Bulgaria. Itinerary and shore excursions are subject to change and may vary by departure. Discover this small fishing town or capture views of glaciers by helicopter, boat or kayak.

Plan ahead and book your cruise of the Inside Passage for the relevant months that best fit the things you are most interested in seeing and doing. The best time to visit both Alaska’s Inside Passage and Canada’s Inside Passage is from spring to the end of summer. The temperatures are pleasant, especially in the summer; the days can be sunny and bright. Do be aware though that, although the rainiest months are generally October and November, the area is known for lots of rainfall all throughout the year.

Find low prices, loads of options, and enjoy flexibility and support should plans change. Visit a Native village, learn about the triumphs and tragedies of Alaska’s Gold Rush heyday or go dog sledding with a real musher. Touring the Inside Passage on an Alaska cruise is your gateway to the fascinating and colorful culture, history and sights of the Great Land. Today, the Boyana Church is under the protection of the National Historical Museum of Bulgaria, and is open to visitors every day from 9am to 6pm. Inside remain the centuries old frescoes of bright and rich colours depict 89 scenes full of vivid characters, including donors to the church and Venetian mariners.

Nurse :: Carnival Medical

cruise ship nursing jobs

Here are some of the top factors to consider when deciding whether cruise ship nursing is right for you. The requirements to work as a nurse on board of a cruise ship include a professional degree, relevant post-graduation experience and an unrestricted medical license. The duration and frequency of days off can vary, ranging from a few days to a week or more, depending on the contract terms and cruise line policies. These days off allow nurses to rest, relax, explore ports of call, and recharge before returning to their duties on board. It’s important to note that the schedule and availability of days off may vary depending on the ship’s operations, such as during peak travel periods or in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

What is a Cruise Ship Nurse?

You should check out cruise line websites to look for job openings, making sure your educational and work experience matches the specific position requirements. A cruise ship nurse can expect to work a 12-hour shift, and nurses rotate days off. However, if a serious problem occurs, you might be called upon on an off day to lend a hand. It’s important to note that salary and benefits packages may vary between cruise lines, and the information provided here is a general overview.

Consider becoming a Cruise Ship Nurse

For more information about daily life and the pros and cons of working on a cruise ship, read our ‘life on a cruise ship’ guide. Please note, a start date might not be available even after you are ready to board, depending on allocated vacancies to new medical staff. After securing your position, you will need to complete a pre-boarding process. At the end of each four months, you will take two months off before beginning a new contract and heading back out to sea.

Steps to Becoming a Cruise Ship Nurse

cruise ship nursing jobs

We’ll also review the steps you’ll need to take to become an RN and advance your nursing career. Cruise ship nurses care for passengers of all ages and cruise line staff as needed. They function as first responders during emergencies, perform patient assessments, assist providers with clinical diagnosing, and administer medications and tests. Assignments for Cruise ship nurse jobs are organized on a rotation basis of 4 months on board and 2 months off – on leave.

How to Become a Cruise Ship Nurse?

Registered nurses on cruise ships can expect to earn anywhere between $4850 and $5000 monthly. Cruise ship nurse’s salary can vary slightly depending on different factors such as previous work experience, years of practice and professional certifications held. It’s important to note that while cruise ship infirmaries are staffed by medical professionals, their scope of practice may be limited compared to onshore medical facilities. In cases where specialized care or services are needed, arrangements may be made to transfer patients to onshore medical facilities at the next port of call. Chief Nurses lead the entire nursing staff and report directly to the ship’s doctor.

Cruise ship nurse salary

Although RNs can enter nursing practice with a two-year ADN degree, employers generally hire nurses who have completed at least a bachelor degree. Most BSNs take between 2-4 years, depending on the type of program and number of credits transferred from previous college courses. If you choose cruise ship nursing for the opportunity to travel, you can visit new destinations at each port of call and enjoy several days or weeks off between contracts. Your daily responsibilities will depend on the type and size of the ship. The average passenger capacity for a cruise ship is 3,000 guests, with the largest ocean liners hosting close to 7,000 passengers with a crew of 2,000.

cruise ship nursing jobs

Some of these nurses report directly to a ship physician and work under the supervision of the head nurse. Because Cruise Ship Nurses are often the first line of defense, some cruise lines prefer to hire RNs with emergency room experience. In addition, nurses who speak more than one language are in high demand on cruiseliners.

Note that contract conditions vary based on cruise line and experience, and first-time cruise ship nurses probably earn less than what ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor report. Major cruise lines also equip ships with full medical facilities, including labs, a pharmacy, X-ray equipment, and more. Of course, cruise ship nurses still must make due with what's available to them onboard the ship. Much like hospitals on land, cruise ships see patients with all types of ailments, sicknesses, and health problems. Common issues like bad sunburns and food poisoning could be followed up by a passenger suffering from cardiac arrest. This is why cruise lines want nurses with plenty of ICU and emergency experience.

Whether you’re looking to get your pre-licensure degree or taking the next step in your career, the education you need could be more affordable than you think. Nursing is a unique profession, allowing practice in a wide variety of settings to help people live better lives.

Keep in mind, however, that cruise lines provide other kinds of compensation, including free transportation for getting to and from your home base and all living expenses while working at sea. Our ships provide a full spectrum of high quality, evidence-based medical care to guests and crew. If you're interested in becoming a cruise ship nurse, check out different cruise line websites to look for open positions. Nurse staffing agencies might also know of cruise ship nurse opportunities that you haven't found.

Within this diverse and welcoming environment, you will provide a broad range of nursing care, supported by a skilled medical team. You will provide basic and emergency nursing care to our guests and crew, working closely with the shipboard Doctor to attend to patients visiting the clinic. Like any other nursing career, working as a cruise ship nurse comes with its ups and downs.

If you have a passion for travel and meeting people from all over the world, a career as a cruise ship nurse may be just what you are looking for. These registered nurses (RNs) provide healthcare for passengers and crew members. In general, cruise ship nurses are not able to bring their families on board. Cruise ship employment contracts typically only cover the nurse’s individual employment, and the living accommodations and facilities provided are designed for single or shared occupancy. The nature of working on a cruise ship involves being away from home for extended periods, often in a limited space environment.

She/ he is called first in case of medical emergency aboard the cruise ship providing first aid care until arrival of the ship's physician. The ship nurse performs nursing care in a proficient, calm and professional manner during routine work shifts as well as duringa crisis, increased workload or emergency situations. Earning an ADN and passing the NCLEX-RN exam offers the quickest pathway to entering the nursing field, but it may not be enough to launch your career as a cruise ship nurse. It’s important to note that cruise ships have trained medical staff and resources to handle medical emergencies on board. However, in cases where specialized care or resources are required, arrangements may be made to transfer individuals to onshore medical facilities at the next port of call.

As the cruise industry recovers from the COVID-19 shutdown, more cruise ship positions will become available. Cruise lines generally hire nurses with at least a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and a valid RN license. Most employers also require certification in basic life support and sometimes in advanced cardiac life support. Cruise ship nurses get to enjoy life on the seas as well as decent salaries. ZipRecruiter estimates that cruise ship nurses earn an average of $81,396 per year, though ZipRecuriter also estimates that more than half of current cruise ship nurses earn less. Glassdoor reports that Royal Carribean nurses earn an estimated base pay of $97,894 per year.

best cruise ship for adults

Some cruise lines have a selection of family-friendly ships, plus some ships which are exclusively for adults. If you choose one of these adult-only ships, you can be sure that there won’t be a child in sight. There are currently three ships in the fleet, with a fourth joining in 2024.

All-Inclusive Cruise Lines That Aren't Adults-Only

Each sailing features demos and dinners with a chef from the James Beard Foundation as well as market visits, tastings and recipes, allowing parents to feel miles from making dinner for picky eaters. Because all staterooms are designed for double occupancy, it's generally a rule that a person traveling alone must pay both fares. This means they would pay twice as much per person as two people sharing a room. Unfortunately, Carnival has been slow to adopt solo cabins, meaning that no ships in its fleet offer accommodations for one.

Best Adults-Focused Cruise For Parents Who Want Alone Time: Windstar Cruises

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. Azamara discourages families with children under 18 as the atmosphere and experiences onboard cater directly to adults. There are no activities for children, nor are there babysitting services. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland’s Royal Portrush.

Oceania Cruises

Celebrity features an adults-only solarium with jacuzzis, heated pools, and comfortable loungers. The pool decks here are casual but elegant and are devoid of water slides, surf simulators, and other waterpark-type activities. From DJ-driven pool parties, a drag queen brunch, midnight dodgeball games, rock star motifs, and even an onboard tattoo parlor, choosing this cruise line will be unlike any other cruise experience. Viking dominates this category due to its "adult-focused environment and luxurious and romantic amenities, such as fireplaces in each ship's common area and private verandas in every stateroom," according to a U.S.

Cruising on the comeback?

Another premium-luxury cruise line which focuses on the adult experience is Oceania Cruises. Couples and friends can enjoy life on board each of the seven ships available to book with Wi-Fi, and all dining and non-alcoholic drinks are included as standard. Allure of the Seas currently offers 7-night Western Caribbean cruises departing from Galveston, Texas and visiting Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. These itineraries have three ports and three sea days, offering the perfect mix of time onboard and in port.

While ultra-premium lines Oceania and Azamara are a slight step down from the previously mentioned luxury lines, the focus is almost entirely on the adults. Neither cruise line has planned activities for children, which works as a deterrent. With that in mind, we've rounded up the best all-inclusive adults-only cruises -- plus, some additional lines and itineraries to consider. The 3,114-passenger Mariner of the Seas is an ideal ship for multigenerational cruises, with plenty of activities to please everyone from young adults to grandparents. Quantum of the Seas, like sister ship Anthem, has a multitude of dining venues that serve great dishes around the ship.

One commercial features children looking forlornly out of rain-streaked windows and singing sadly about their parents cruising without them. It’s all in good fun, of course, with an onboard atmosphere that is intentionally a little naughty and not suitable for young families. It’s in this welcoming, anything-goes environment that solo cruisers will thrive, with ample opportunities to mingle—or not. Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year.

From the décor of the ship and its style of stateroom design to the dining offerings and entertainment, Virgin Voyages is already making waves as a unique cruise line for adults seeking a getaway of their own. Jenna DeLaurentis enjoys exploring new ports of call around the world on a cruise ship, learning about new cultures, discovering beautiful landscapes, and trying diverse cuisine. She loves to get active while at port, whether cycling through mountains in the Caribbean or scuba diving under the sea. Outside of dining venues, Rhapsody of the Seas also features a spacious adults-only Solarium, large spa and salon, Schooner Bar, and a variety of entertainment lounges and venues. Starting in November 2023, Allure of the Seas will offer 3 and 4-night cruises departing from Port Canaveral, Florida. These itineraries will visit both Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, with the 4-night cruise including one day at sea.

She even studied abroad on Semester at Sea, sailing the world on a ship while taking courses for college and visiting 4 continents.
